Air Pacific Airlines was the former national carrier of Fiji, originally established in 1947 as Katafaga Estates Ltd. Renamed Fiji Airways in 1951, the airline became a vital connector within the South Pacific. In 1970, following Fiji's independence, the airline adopted the name Air Pacific to reflect its broader regional presence, operating routes across Oceania, Asia, and North America.
For decades, Air Pacific was instrumental in promoting tourism and trade throughout the Pacific. The airline operated international and domestic flights to over 17 cities in 10 countries, with Qantas Airways as a major shareholder, holding a 46% stake.
In 2012, the airline announced it would return to its roots by rebranding back to Fiji Airways, a name that better represents its national identity and heritage. The rebrand officially launched in 2013, ushering in a new era of modernized service while preserving the warmth and authenticity that Air Pacific was known for.
